DZMM Receives Two Citations in the New York Festivals International Radio Broadcasting Awards

ABS-CBN 2's flagship AM radio station dzMM Radyo Patrol Sais Trenta (630khz) received two international honors in May from the prestigious New York Festivals International Radio Broadcasting Awards.

Radio dzMM's 'Special Coverage of the Manila Hostage Drama' is a finalist in the Breaking News Story (Longform), while dzMM station manager Angelo Palmones is a finalist for the Talk Show Host category for the his science-oriented radio show "Bago Yan, Ah!"

We feel proud that the work of local station in the Philippines is being recognized globally. It is actually a challenge to us to excel more and to work for excellence," Palmones told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

Palmones added that dzMM believes that the recognition will give them greater audience share, and would entail more effort on their part to meet raised public expectation, including that of an international audience.

"Nakakatakot siya... it could only mean that you have to be consistent in your presentation to address the need of the global audience. Ang hirap. It’s really very challenging that we have to think of new approache, continue the learning process and make sure that we are up within the global standard," Palmones added.

Palmones said, "Bago Yan, Ah!" is the country's only longest running radio program that really focuses on Science and Technology.

And for the 'Special Coverage of Manila Hostage Drama', Palmones said that it was also recognized since it showcased the human aspect of Philippine media.

"Kasi doon ang pinakita doon is how to protect life, how to save lives. Doon ipinakita ang Philippine media. It’s the showcase of how we value life, regardless kung iyan ay criminal who endangers the life of others," explains Palmones.

Palmones said it was not the first time for dzMM to receive international recognition. Just last year, dzMM’s news program “Radyo Patrol Balita” bested more than 50 entries worldwide and won in the Best News category for Radio at the 2007 Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Prizes held in Tehran.

"Para sa coverage namin iyon ng isang bagyo and the reason why we won is again despite the situation, the urgency of the situation, ang pinromote naman doon is calmness and giving the assurance doon sa mga taong in distress. It’s always the human factor na naipinapakita and the value for life na pinapakita ng station o ng coverage that made it to winning the title," he said.

Palmones also revealed that dzMM is in the process of pursuing continuing education not only for station's reporters but also for its anchors.

Palmones said that dzMM stands by its commitment to be Una sa Balita (First in News), Una sa Public Service (First in Public Service).

He added that every sort of feedback,, accolades as well as criticisms, to improve their services.

"We need their inputs and we need the information that they can give on how we can improve more our services to the Filipinos, wherever they maybe," he ended.

Palmones is set to leave the country for the awards ceremony that will be held this coming June 19 at Tribeca Rooftop in New York.
